Notes

Between the wars a country of refuge for Central and Eastern European Jews, and after 1945 a transit point for survivors bound for Palestine. Yitzhak Estrajcher stayed here in 1946, joining a training commune ("hachshara") organised by members of the Jewish Brigade; Serge Isedore Szternberg lived here until his death around 1997.
