Ukmergė, Lithuania

Town north‑east of Kaunas; its Jewish community was among the first destroyed after the German invasion. In August–September 1941 the Jews of Ukmergė and Jews brought in from the surrounding district, including from Kaunas, were shot in the nearby Pivonija forest. At least thirteen members of the Turetz family and their in‑laws — Simcha Freida Turetz with her children Chaja‑Gitel, Sara Ite, Rochl, Hese, Khatskel, Kalman and Moti, together with Gutel Kessel, Hanoch Toker, Basia Lea Turetz, Pesl Kazlovich and Moshe Zelanski — were killed here in 1941.
