Kaunas ghetto, Kaunas, Lithuania

Nazi ghetto sealed in August 1941 in the poor Vilijampolė (Slobodka) suburb across the river from central Kaunas; about 29,000 Jews were confined there. Hanoch Kaplieckis, Chiena "Zelda" Porubansky, Berl Porubansky and Mania Turetz are recorded as residents from August 1941, and Hanoch and Mania's marriage took place inside the ghetto. When the ghetto was liquidated in July 1944 its survivors were deported — the women to Stutthof, the men to Dachau/Kaufering or to camps in Estonia and Germany. Most of the other inmates were shot at the Ninth Fort or at nearby execution sites.
