City on the confluence of the Neman and Neris rivers; between the wars the provisional capital of independent Lithuania and home to a Jewish community of some 35,000–40,000. This is the centre of gravity of the Lithuanian side of the family: 126 recorded events between 1882 and 1963 touching more than forty relatives of the Turetz (Turecas), Porubansky, Dreispulis, Langmann and Kessel lines. Births, marriages and residences run through the 1900s–1930s; the mid‑1920s to late‑1930s bring a dense run of passport and Lithuanian residency‑permit applications as members of the family tried to arrange emigration. In June 1941 the Germans took the city; the family was forced into the Kovno (Kaunas) ghetto, and most of those still here were murdered at the Ninth Fort, at Ukmergė, or deported to camps. Itzik and Mania Turetz survived ghetto, Stutthof and further camps, returned briefly after the war (the last residences and employments recorded here run to 1971), and then left for Israel.
