Michla "Mania" Turetz was born Mania (Michla) Porubansky on 9 April 1924 in Kaunas, Lithuania, the eldest child of Berl Porubansky and Chiena "Zelda", née Katz. She attended the Kaunas 3rd State Gymnasium and the Salomėja Nėris secondary school, and Jewish religious classes. After the German invasion she was confined in the Kovno (Kaunas) ghetto from July 1941. During those years she married Hanoch Kaplieckis in the ghetto; he was later deported and died at Landsberg (Kaufering) in 1945. When the ghetto was liquidated in July 1944 Mania was deported to Stutthof and then to forced-labour camps around Danzig (Baumgarten, Leibitsch, Freudendorf, Praust). She was liberated near Praust on 24 March 1945 and recovered in Gdańsk. She returned to Kaunas and, on 13 July 1946, married Itzik Turetz, himself a camp survivor; they lived at 89 Laisvės Alėja and had two daughters, Genia and Sima. Mania worked at the Kaunas Radio Factory as a technical control inspector. In 1971 the family emigrated to Israel and settled at 8 Akiva Street, Ra'anana, where she lived for the next forty years. She died in Petah Tikva on 21 April 2011, aged 87, and is buried at the New Cemetery, Kfar Nachman.
