Notes

The Belgian capital. Joel Elias Blank lived in Saint‑Gilles and Schaerbeek from 1933; Hendla Szternberg lived here in 1938. In the immediate post‑war years the city was a way‑station for survivors — Yitzhak Estrajcher (1946), Chawa Mandelbaum (1945), and Tyla Beeri, who visited family here in 1947–48 while waiting to reach Palestine. Serge Isedore Szternberg was born in Brussels in 1942, in hiding.
