Biography
Chawa Mandelbaum, born Chawa Szternberg, was born on 14 October 1916 in Sosnowiec, a daughter of Icek Szternberg and Frajda Jochweta Krakauer, and worked as a furrier. Between 1942 and 1945 she was held in the forced labour camp at Parschnitz, a major subcamp of the Gross-Rosen complex. After the war she lived, from December 1945, at her sister Hendla Blank's home in Brussels. On the night of 22 June to 2 July 1946 she sailed for Haifa among 1,086 Jewish survivors aboard a ship that left Sète, on the French coast, and on arrival was held at the Atlit detention camp until early August. She then lived at her sister Rachel Fainer's home in Ra'anana until, on 12 October 1947, she married Josef Baruch Mandelbaum in Tel Aviv. They had two sons, Itzhak Efraim and David. Chawa died in Tel Aviv on 5 January 2011 and is buried at the New Ramat Hasharon Morasha Cemetery.
