Biography
Rachmiel Alter Katz, also known as Alter Katz, was born on 6 December 1903, a son of Chonon Katz and Judes Telz, and worked as a commercial agent. He applied for an internal passport in Vilnius in May 1922, and over the following two decades the family's recorded addresses moved several times across the city — Maironio Street in 1925, Didžioji Street later that year, and from the early 1930s an apartment on Kruopų Street. On 12 December 1925 he married Bluma Sznitkin, and they had two children, Jehudis and Jehoszua. By 31 May 1939 the family was living at 11 Ligoninės Street, and it was at that same address that they were confined when the Vilna ghetto was established there on 27 May 1942. Rachmiel was murdered in the Holocaust, deported to Dundaga, sometime between 1943 and 1944.
