Itzik Turetz (Icikas Turecas) was born on 5 October 1919 in Kaunas, Lithuania, one of the twelve children of Yakov and Simcha Freida Turetz. He completed four grades of elementary school and trained as a tinsmith, apprenticing and then working for Josel Kessel on Birstono Street; in January 1941 he lived at 24 Darbininkų Street. When Germany invaded in June 1941 he fled Kaunas eastward and was caught in Latvia, held in the Daugavpils (Dünaburg) prison, ghetto and fortress until October 1943. He was then moved through the camps — Kaiserwald in Riga, the HKP army-vehicle labour camp, Stutthof (prisoner 96220) from October 1944, the Magdeburg sub-camp of Buchenwald, and finally Sachsenhausen, where he was liberated on 22 April 1945. His mother and most of his siblings were murdered near Ukmergė or at the Kaunas forts in 1941, while his father was killed in Daugavpils. His brother Iser was killed with the Red Army at Kursk in 1943. He had earlier been connected to Gutel Kessel, who was murdered at Ukmergė in 1941. After the war Itzik returned to Kaunas. On 13 July 1946 he married Michla "Mania" Turetz (née Porubansky), a survivor of the Kovno ghetto and Stutthof whose first husband, Hanoch Kaplieckis, had died in the camps. They lived at 89 Laisvės Alėja and had two daughters, Genia and Sima. Itzik worked on industrial ventilation systems until 1971, when the couple emigrated to Israel and settled at 8 Akiva Street, Ra'anana, where he ran a sheet-metal roofing business. He died in Jerusalem on 1 November 1996 and is buried at the New Cemetery, Kfar Nachman, Ra'anana.
