Principal port of entry for immigrants to the United States. Most of the family's American branch first landed here — Leo Tiefenbrunner (1927), the Scharf and Ettlinger families (1937), Wolf Zeigfried Schmidt (1947, from Haifa on the SS Rossia), Bill Smith (1938) — many of them passing through Ellis Island. Fay "Papi" Frimet died here in 2004 and is buried on Hart Island.
