Biography

Chaja Debora Schneeweiss, later Chaja Debora Schmidt, was born on 25 September 1885 in Chmielnik, a daughter of Leib Yehuda Hillinger and Lea Rivka Schneeweiss. She married Leib Schmidt, and they had three children — Suzan, Bill and Wolf Zeigfried. In February 1909 the couple registered in Chemnitz, having arrived from Cologne. Widowed and living under the German occupation, she eventually escaped Europe by way of Cuba, departing Camagüey on 24 February 1944 and being admitted to the United States at Miami that same day. She died in New York City in June 1972.
