Biography

Itzhak Ernst Estreicher, also recorded as Icek Estrajcher and later known as Irwin Ernst, was born on 10 June 1913 in Sosnowiec, a son of Symcha Binem Estrajcher and Estera Laja Ernst, and trained as an electrician. He married Itka Kartusz and they had a son, Simcha Bonim; both Itka and Simcha were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau on 31 January 1944. Itzchak survived the war and was registered as a displaced person at Bergen-Belsen on 27 June 1945, still listed there in a further AJDC record of 14 November 1947. He remarried, to Hela Markowicz, and on 22 September 1949 the couple emigrated from Bergen-Belsen to the United States via Bremerhaven, settling in Michigan and taking the name Ernst. They had two children, Albert and Lynn Meredith. Itzchak died in Michigan on 20 December 1996 and is buried at the Machpelah Cemetery.
